These conferences are designed to provide resources, information and support to help develop a more self-sufficient African American community. With African American Men and Boys, and Women and Girls, working together, we believe this will help our young people develop mental tools and strategies to enable them to succeed better in life. Many of our children do not have a male father figure in their homes, and this is a major problem. Thus, one of our goals is the active engagement and collaboration of successful African American males to guide, mentor and teach adolescent boys critical thinking and life skills for success. We are addressing many issues facing our children through community, parent and student engagement. During the next 9 months, we expect an average of 400 to 700 students, parents, community leaders, elected officials, and AISD, RRISD and University of Texas administrators to participate in 15 to 20 workshops per month at each conference. Information and feedback gathered each session will be shared with school board administrators and members of the board of trustees in an effort to address the issues and challenges surrounding the academic achievement gap.
