Code of Ethics for Discipline

Love and Logic is a philosophy of raising and teaching children which allows adults to be happier, empowered, and more skilled in the interactions with children. Love allows children to grow through their mistakes. Logic allows children to live with the consequences of their choices. Love and Logic is a way of working with children that puts parents and teachers back in control, teaches children to be responsible, and prepares young people to live in the real world, with its many choices and consequences.

Using Love and Logic as our guide, with the understanding that we are an inclusive community, Teravista is modeling and operating with the following principles:

1.  We will react without anger or haste to problem situations.

2.  We will provide consequences that allow the child to experience the results of a poor choice, enabling him or her to make better choices in the future.

3.  We will proceed in all situations with the best interest of the child foremost in our minds – academic, social and emotional well-being will be fostered.

4.  We will guide students toward personal responsibility and the decision-making skills they will need to function in the real world.

5.  We will arrange consequences for problem situations in such a way that the child will not be humiliated or demeaned.

6.  Equal is not always fair.  Consequences will be designed to fit the situation of the individual students, and they may be different even when situations appear to be the same.

7.  We are always open to calm, rational discussion of any matter.
