Everything you need to know about attendance...

  • By state law, students must be in attendance 90% of the days of class to earn credit.

  • Students cannot be absent more than four (4) days per class per semester without possible loss of credit OR denial of a VOE form (which is required for a Driver’s permit or license).

  • Students are excused for personal illness or a death of an immediate family member, if a note from a parent or Doctor is provided within 48 hours of their return to school.

  •  Any absences which are covered with a Doctor’s note will not be counted against the student for make-up hours.

  • Students are allowed up to ten (10) school-related absences per year.

  • Students with two (2) or fewer absences and an 85 average may exempt final exams.
Three (3) exemptions are allowed per semester with no repeat in subjects during the school year.

  • Tardies affect a student’s eligibility for exam exemptions – every three (3) tardies count as an absence, for every class period, no matter where they occur across the schedule.

  • Absence from a class on the alternative block schedule may have a significant negative impact on a student’s success.

  • Many subjects involve group projects and active student participation which is difficult to make up due to an absence.  In addition, participation in extracurricular activities limits available time for make up work within the classroom.

  • Excessive absences can only be made up in Saturday D-Hall.

Exam Exemption Policy
Students who have an 85 or better average and no more than 2 absences in a class may exempt the exam. Three tardies equal an absence and are cumulative across all blocks. An exam in a full year course may be selected either first OR second semester. A student is limited to 3 exemptions per semester and is accountable for keeping up with the number of exemptions.

Procedures for arriving or leaving during the school day:
  • If a student is to leave early from school, they must go to the Main Office BEFORE SCHOOL to exchange their parent/guardian note, giving them permission to leave early from school, for a pass to allow them to leave at the appropriate time.

  • Upon returning from a Doctor’s Appointment, the student must turn in their Doctor note to the Main Office, within 48 hours of the absence.

  • If a student arrives to school after the tardy bell has rung, they must go the the Main Office to SIGN-IN - - a tardy is within the first 10 minutes. of the class period, an absence is after the 10 minutes.

  • If a student is considered TRUANT, the teachers will be notified by e-mail from the appropriate Administrative Assistant.  A student who is considered truant, shall receive a zero on assignments and tests

Truancy
Truancy may also result in assessment of penalties by a court of law against both the student and his/her parents.  A complaint against the parent may be filed in the appropriate court if the student:
  • is absent from school on 10 or mores days or parts of days within a six-month period in the same school year, or
  • is absent on 3 or more days or parts of days within a four-week period.

Tardy Policy

Teaching students to learn that being punctual is a requirement in most occupations is an important part of teaching the “whole” student.  That social part of their learning can be just as valuable to them as anything else that they learn.  For that reason, our tardy policy is something that must be supported and adhered to.

A student is considered tardy to class if he/she is outside of the classroom without a hall pass when the tardy bell rings.  Teachers follow the guidelines to ensure that all Stony Point High School students have the same requirements for attendance.

Repeated tardiness will be handled by the student's Assistant Principal’s office.

GUIDELINES:   Tardies accumulate for an entire semester they do NOT start over each six weeks!

  • Teachers should be standing at their door during the passing period and should encourage students to move into class prior to the tardy bell.  Once the tardy bell rings, students entering afterwards will be counted tardy on attendance by the teacher.

  • Teachers having a conference period are to sweep the halls nearest their room.  (B-wing, 1st floor and restrooms, etc.)  Students in the hall/restroom are to be directed immediately to their class.  Principals will also assist with this.

  • Teachers should mark their attendance on their computer by 10 minutes into the period.  Students entering after that time are to be counted absent.   Teachers need to design their class in such a way that taking attendance is built into your plans at 15-20 minutes into the period.

TEA (Verification of Enrollment) Forms
The sign up book for requesting a V.O.E form is in the main office.
Allow 48 hours for completion of the form.

Students requesting a V.O.E. form to present to the Dept. of Public Safety as part of the driver's license application process must be enrolled and in attendance for at least 90 percent of the days classes are scheduled for the semester preceding the date of the application.   DPS requires a V.O.E. form for each permit, license and renewal until the student is 18 years of age.

If you have been absent from any class more than 4 times during a semester,  YOU WILL BE DENIED A V.O.E. FORM.

If you desire a permit or a license, YOU MUST ATTEND SCHOOL.
