If a student calls home complaining of illness, please ascertain that they are in the nurse's office so that we can give you the particulars and ensure that they are ready to be signed out from the nurse's office when you arrive. Students are discouraged from calling from classrooms, etc.
BY RRISD POLICY..
All medications are to be signed in by a parent and kept in the nurse's office. This includes over-the-counter medications such as Ibuprofen and Midol. Cough drops are permitted to be carried as well as contact lens solutions (NO Visine)
Students who wear contacts should have their own solution and storage case in the backpacks.
Breakfast is still considered an extremely important start to the day. Please encourage your child to eat "something", especially as we head into the end of the year testing. A good night's sleep helps, TOO!
School Nurse, Han Milare, BSN/RN
This school year, I look forward to working with your child at Stony Point. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about some of the health office procedures in order to alleviate problems later on.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE PINK EMERGENCY CARD IS COMPLETED AND RETURNED ON THE SECOND DAY OF SCHOOL
- H1N1 (SWINE) FLU INFORMATION - Students who have flu symptoms (including but not limited to; cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, fever of 100˚ or higher) should remain at home or will be sent home and must be symptom free and fever free for 24 hours (without fever reducing medication).
- INFECTION CONTROL AND PREVENTION - Practice frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying at home when you have symptoms will decrease the spread of infection.
- MEDICATION PROCEDURES - Written permission from a parent or legal guardian is required prior to school personnel administering prescription or non prescription medication. Prescription and non-prescription medication must be in the original container and properly labeled. You may wish to ask the pharmacist for an extra labeled bottle for sending medication to school. Medication that can be administered at home, i.e. two or three times daily, should be done at home, if at all possible. Long-term (daily) medications (prescription and over-the-counter) may be given by school nurse provided that your physician completes the district medication permission request form. Requests to alter dosage or frequency of medication must be accompanied by your physician’s written order stating the dosage and frequency of medication to be given. Directions on over-the counter packaging (regarding age, dose and frequency) will be followed unless a doctor’s order is submitted. Medications must be turned into the nurse’s office. Students may carry their medication with school nurse and physician approval and appropriate forms on file. Please check with your child concerning health concerns before they leave for school. So often that little sore throat turns into a major discomfort when you add the stress of learning a new concept. We keep no medications on campus other than what you send for your child. We CANNOT give Tylenol, Aspirin, etc. without you providing the medicine and a signed permission to administer form.
- VISION, HEARING SCREENING - We will be screening 7th grade students for Vision and Hearing problems. These screenings are required by the Texas Department of State Health Services. We will notify you if there is a possible concern.
- ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS SCREENING - The State of Texas is now requiring students in the 7th grade to be screened for Acanthosis Nigricans signs and symptoms. The screening will consist of a visual exam of the student’s neck and knuckles. This condition appears on the skin as light brown-black, velvety, rough or thickened areas. These markings in children may be an indicator of potentially serious health or medical problems. We will notify you if there is any reason for concern.
- SPINAL SCREENING - 8th grade students will be screening for signs and symptoms of Scoliosis (abnormal “S” curvature of the spine). This screening is required by the Texas Department of State Health Services. We will notify you if there is a possible concern.
- CLOTHES CLOSET - The Clothes Closet continues this year. This service is two-fold. If you have any good used clothing that your child has outgrown, you can bring them to the nurse’s office to be distributed to the “Closet”. The Clothes Closet is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 – 11:30. If you need help with clothing, please stop by the nurse’s office and pick up a referral form. All requests are confidential.
- SHOT RECORDS - Please forward updated shot records to your school nurse. The Texas Department of State Health Services requires all students to be up-to-date on their immunizations in order to attend school. Children may receive immunizations at a routine doctor’s appointment during the school year and the school records can not be updated until this information is forwarded to the school.
- COMMUNICABLE DISEASE - Please report all communicable diseases to the nurses’ clinic to assist in the prevention and spread of these illnesses at school and protects those students with special health needs. We need to remind you that children will be sent home if they have a temperature of 100˚ or more. Also, remember that students need to be FREE of FEVER for 24 hours (without fever reducing medicine) before returning to school from an illness.
-
HEALTH PROBLEMS - We would appreciate it if you would let us know about any health problems or pertinent information concerning your child’s health. This information can be included on the health history form you received in your First Day Packet. This form should be completed in blue or black ink, and returned within the first few days of school. PINK EMERGENCY CARDS are required to be updated every year. Please give us current EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS so we can reach you during the school year. If the numbers change mid-year, please notify the registrar or the nurse
of the changes. - WE MUST KNOW HOW TO LOCATE YOU IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY
- PLEASE UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
