The SSHS Initiative is an unprecedented
collaborative grant program supported by three Federal agencies-the U.S. Departments
of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice. The SSHS Initiative seeks to
develop real-world knowledge about what works best to promote safe and healthy environments
in which America's children can learn and develop.
More than $31 million in grants have been awarded to 19 school districts in 14 states
as part of a joint effort by the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services
and Justice to support schools in creating safe learning environments that promote healthy
childhood development and prevent youth violence and drug use. Round Rock Independent School
District was awarded with the Safe Schools Healthy Students grant in 2005.
Under the Safe Schools Healthy Students initiative, Round Rock ISD, in partnership with
local law enforcement, juvenile justice and mental health agencies is implementing a
comprehensive plan focused on six elements including safe school environments, mental health
treatment services, and early childhood emotional development programs. Working together,
we're using programs and services with proven track records to provide our students with
safer school environments.
SSHS Round Rock seeks to create system change resulting in:
- Customized comprehensive and integrated programs and services that prevent violence and promote healthy child development in Round Rock children and families;
- Enhancement of the pre-existing partnerships of The Children's Support Coalition (CSC) to double the number of children served
