Below are the elements of a book talk:
Ways to Begin:
(Choose 1 or 2)
- Show
the cover of the book and tell
what drew you to it.
- Give
the title and the author and explain how they “hooked”
you.
- Ask a question… “Have any of you ever
wanted to/ thought about/ been in a situation where…?” (fill in with
information about what happened in your book
- “Imagine…” then give the predicament your character
was in
During the Book
Talk: (Choose 2 or 3 or create some
of your own)
- Choose
a page from the story and read it, leaving off at a
suspenseful part
- Give a
very brief summary of part of
the book… never give away the ending or key, exciting parts of the plot
- Read the first page, then give a
brief overview of what comes next until you have explained the main
conflict in the book
- Read
an interesting description of a
character or a setting and build suspense as to the role he/she/ it
plays; or, draw a picture and do the same
- Read the book jacket and ask the
questions it does not answer… tell the audience they’ll have to read it to
find out
- Explain what you did and did not like
about the book: which characters
were your favorite, the style of writing, the setting, favorite scenes,
etc.
How to End:
·
Tell your audience why they should read the book in whatever manner you wish.
·
Cite your
sources for any images or music you
used in your book talk
