To receive
credit in a class, a student must attend at least 90
percent of the days the class is offered. A student
who attends at least 75 percent but fewer than 90
percent may receive credit for the class if he or she
completes a plan, approved by the principal that allows
the student to fulfill the instructional requirements
for the class.
Students are excused for personal illness or a
death of an immediate family member, if a note from a parent or Doctor is
provided within 48 hours of their
return to school.
Any absences which are covered with a Doctor's
note will not be counted against the student.
Upon returning from a Doctor’s Appointment, the
student must turn in their Doctor note to the Attendance Office, within 48
hours of the absence.
If a student arrives to school after the tardy
bell has rung, the student must go the Attendance Office to SIGN-IN - a
tardy is within the first 10 minutes of the class period, an absence is
after the 10 minutes.
What to do if a student is absent?
It is not necessary to call the attendance
office. Bring a note the next day and turn that into the attendance
office. It is important to have documentation for the student file.
Getting A Student Out Of Class:
If a student is to leave early from school, they
must go to the Attendance Office BEFORE SCHOOL to exchange their
parent/guardian note, giving them permission to leave early from school, for
a PERMIT to LEAVE CLASS which allows them to meet their ride at the
appropriate time at the Attendance Office.
Whenever a student arrives or leaves the school
they are required to sign at the Attendance Office.
If the student drives, the parent/guardian is
not required to come to the school. Parents, please indicate this on
the note.
Leaving the Campus:
Once a student arrives at school, he/she is not
permitted to leave campus at any time during the school day without
administrative permission, except students classified as senior who may
leave during their respective lunch periods, or students who have completed
their school day. Students who are enrolled in a work cooperative
program may leave campus when their instruction day is completed.
Seniors departing and returning from lunch must be prepared to wear or show
their ID’s while doing so and when requested while off campus. Senior
privilege of leaving campus for lunch may be revoked (for individuals or for
the entire senior class) for any violation of closed campus rules.
Should any student need to leave the campus for any
reason, he/she must have the permission of an administrator and MUST SIGN
OUT IN THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE. Failure to obtain such permission
and /or failure to sign out will result in an unexcused and/or truancy
absence.
TEA/VOE – Driver’s License:
To obtain a drivers license, a student must annually
provide to the Texas Department of Public Safety a form obtained from the
school verifying that the student has met the 90 percent attendance
requirement of the semester preceding the date of application. The AP
office provides this service.
EXEMPTIONS:
Students with two (2) or fewer absences and an
85 average may exempt final exams. Three (3) exemptions are allowed per
semester with no repeat in subjects during the school year.
Tardies affect a student's eligibility for exam
exemptions – every three (3) tardies count as an absence, for every class
period, no matter where they occur across the schedule.
Tardies:
Students are marked tardy within the first 10
minutes of the bell. They are marked absent 10 minutes after the
bell.
Teaching students to learn that being punctual
is a requirement in most occupations is an important part of teaching the
“whole” student. That social part of their learning can be just as
valuable to them as anything else that they learn. For that reason,
our tardy policy is something that must be supported and adhered to.
A student is considered tardy to class if he/she
is outside of the classroom without a hall pass when the tardy bell rings.
Teachers follow the guidelines to ensure that all McNeil High School
students have the same requirements for attendance.
Repeated tardiness will be handled by the
student's Assistant Principal’s office. Teachers should be standing at their
door during the passing period and should encourage students to move into
class prior to the tardy bell. Once the tardy bell rings, students
entering afterwards will be counted tardy on attendance by the teacher.
