Great Oaks Traffic

The safety of the students at Great Oaks Elementary School is the primary concern behind all traffic plans and suggestions put forth by the Traffic Committee.  The purpose of the committee is to find ways to improve the traffic flow and safety of the students.  A goal of this committee was to create a page that may be used to answer any questions or concerns that Great Oaks' partners may have about traffic.

Car Riders

  • Cars should use the drop off/pick up driveway off of Neenah Ave.

  • Cars should line up on Neenah Ave. approaching the school and make a right turn into the driveway.

  • Cars will not be allowed to turn left off of Neenah Ave. into the car rider line.

  • To join the car rider line from Great Oaks Dr., please proceed on Great Oaks Dr., turn on Pepper Rock Dr., take an additional left on Dorman Dr.  Here you may join the line and proceed down Neenah Ave.

  • In the mornings:

    • Please allow the safety patrol to help your child(ren) out of the car.

    • Be Patient - The morning commute down Great Oaks Dr. tends to slow the exit of cars from the car rider line.

  • In the afternoons:

    • Prepare a sign with the student(s) name(s) and grade(s) on it and place it where it can be seen by staff along the driveway (prop up on dashboard, clip to visor, place in window).

Walkers, Bikers, Scooters, Etc.

  • Students who walk, ride bikes, skate, ride scooters, and the like, should enter the school from the entrances near the bicycle racks.

  • In the morning:

    • Bikes must be walked from the corner of 1. Cornerwood & Neenah and 2. Great Oaks & Neenah.

    • Skates should be removed after crossing at a crosswalk and student(s) should walk to a school entrance.

    • Scooters must be folded and carried after crossing at a crosswalk and student(s) should walk to a school entrance.

    • Bikes and scooters are required to be left at the bike racks (preferably locked).

  • In the afternoon:

    • Students must wait until after they cross at a crosswalk to begin riding their bike, riding their scooter or putting skates on.

Park and Walk

  • Parents who choose to park in the front parking lot or surrounding streets to drop off or pick up must accompany their student into and out of the building.  For the safety of the students, please do not drive up and let students walk unaccompanied into the building from the parking lot or surrounding streets.

  • Park only in marked spaces.  Do not park in handicapped spaces without an appropriate permit, even for the short time needed to walk into the school.

  • Do not park in the fire lanes even for the short time needed to walk into the school.  (Fire lanes are marked red along the curb.)

  • If you park along Neenah Ave., please walk to the nearest corner crosswalk.  Do not cross without a crossing guard and do not cross near the car rider line.

  • When parking on nearby streets, please be a good neighbor and do not block or use private driveways.

Bus and Day Care

  • Bus service is provided for students from the Park at Brushy Creek Apartments.

  • The front circular drive is reserved for commercial vehicles to drop off/pick up large numbers of students at a time.

  • Please do not cross the circular drive at any other location other than the marked crosswalk.

  • Students waiting on these vehicles are expected to wait on the sidewalk and refrain from approaching the vehicle until it comes to a complete stop and are instructed to board the vehicle.

Parking in Fire Lanes

  • Parking in the fire lanes is not only prohibited, but it is illegal.  Please find an alternative spot to park (Neenah Ave.).  For the safety of the students, these fire lanes need to be free of obstructions so that in case of a fire, proper vehicles can access the school.

Crossing at an Unmonitored Area

  • Crossing at unmonitored areas (across Neenah Ave) is discouraged.  Crosswalks and crossing guards are stationed so that students may cross onto and off of school property safely.

  • If you park on Neenah Ave., please walk your student(s) to the nearest crosswalk and access the campus safely.

Main Hallway Pick-up

This is an option for Kindergarten and First Grade Students only.

  • Parents picking up student(s) in the main hallway during the afternoon are encouraged to read the following suggestions:

    • If a younger child accompanies you to the school, please keep them near you. Do not allow them to wander through the hallways and near the library. Positively encourage them to follow the same rules his/her older sibling follows (quiet voices, hands off the walls, walking feet).

    • Have your child meet you in the hallway. Do not allow them to meet you outside the building near the circular drive. Accompany your child across the street at the appropriate areas.

    • Kinder and 1st grade parents who also have children 2-5 should pick their kindergartener or 1st grader here first, and then proceed to the front bike rack area to pick up older children.

Front Bike Rack Pick-up

  • This area is for parents wishing to meet their older student(s) in grades 2-5 and all  students riding a bike or walking home via Great Oaks Drive without a parent.

  • Although it is not recommended that parents park in the front parking lot and walk to the front of the building to pick up their child, those who choose to do so should pick up their child here.

Why can't car riders use the front circular drive?

  • The front drive is designated for commercial vehicles, such as buses and day care vans to load and unload children.

  • Cars are not allowed to use the front circular drive due to county restrictions. The county engineer's report concludes that using the drive as a mass loading/unloading area will cause a heavy backup on Great Oaks Dr. (This is considered a major traffic artery accessing Hwy. 620 from the adjacent neighborhoods.)

Why must we cross at the crosswalks?

  • Crossing at unmonitored areas (across Neenah Ave) is discouraged.  Crosswalks and crossing guards are stationed so that students may cross onto and off of school property safely.

  • There are two crosswalks that service the Great Oaks campus. One is located on the corner of Great Oaks Dr. and Neenah Ave. The second is located at the corner of Neenah Ave. and Cornerwood Dr. Using these two crosswalks to access our campus is strongly encouraged.

Who makes decisions about Great Oaks traffic?

  • The Great Oaks Traffic Committee along with the Round Rock ISD Transportation Services Department and the County Engineer collaborate on the decisions made about traffic flow and safety guidelines. The Traffic Committee is made up of administrators, staff members, and parents.
