Parent Teacher Association - P.T.A.

What follows is a list of programs that have been supported by various PTAs over the last years. If you would like to chair or assist, or suggest additional programs, please notify the Great Oaks Elementary office (464-6850).

Each committee chair joins the PTA officers, principal, and teacher representatives to form the PTA Executive Board. The Board meets on a monthly basis to discuss status of PTA activities, make decisions that require the full board, determine things the PTA should help with, and make budget recommendations. Each chair person will involve more people to assist in their program.

2009-2010 PTA Board and Committees

Parliamentarian
Responsible for ensuring necessary meeting rules are followed during Executive Board and General Meetings.
Historian
Responsible for keeping a record of the year's activities. This includes pictures and written items from the year.
Clothes Closet
The school district maintains a facility containing clothing, shoes, and limited supplies for students with needs. Each school collects donations and helps staff the facility. Working at the facility involves approximately 3 hours each month.
Cultural Enrichment
PTA funds have been used to support student assemblies and special events at the school. A coordinator is needed to aid in the selection, booking, and support of these.
Directory
Each year a school directory listing the members of every classroom, school phone numbers, and student information is published. The chair is in charge of gathering the necessary information, producing the draft, publicizing and taking orders, and distribution of the completed directory.
Fund Raising
The committee chair is involved in the selection of fundraising events. Following selection of events, the chair is responsible for ensuring each fund-raiser is organized and completed. Others will become involved with individual events as coordinators, order takers, sorters, sales people, and other roles.
Home Room Coordinator
Each teacher has a person(s) designated to assist in the coordination of classroom activities. The classroom activities are different for each teacher. The PTA chair is involved in helping to ensure each teacher has a room coordinator and for ensuring consistent information is given to each person.
Hospitality
During some of the PTA General Meetings, refreshments are provided. Teachers and the administration have a variety of things sponsored by the PTA that can include a "Welcome Luncheon", special things during holidays, and an "End of Year" event. The chair of this committee is responsible for organizing these and will utilize many others for each event.
Ice Cream
If Great Oaks Elementary elects to participate in this fund raiser a chair will be required to order and stock ice cream and schedule people to do the sales.
Membership
This person is responsible for ensuring membership information is given to everyone and that completed forms are received. Completion of the membership list, payment to the state and national PTA, and distribution of membership cards are part of the committee responsibility.
Partners in Education
This is another district wide program. The chair is responsible for working with various businesses in the city to assist and award students. Attendance and scholastic awards, tutoring, and special events are just some of the things that have been done through this program. The chair will be responsible for working with the officers, administration, and school district to determine how Great Oaks Elementary will use this program.
Reflections
Creativity in writing, art, music, and photography are supported by the school district through this program. Students complete entries that are submitted for our school's program. Certain entries advance through the district, region, and state. The chair organizes this program for Great Oaks Elementary.
School Spirit (T-Shirts, etc)
The chair would be responsible for events promoting school spirit. These will include the school t-shirt (which is a large undertaking) and other ideas that come forward from the teachers, administration, parents, and PTA board.
Volunteer Coordinator
A huge number of volunteers are used within the school. The volunteer coordinator works with the school to provide people when they are needed.
Yearbook Coordinator
Should Great Oaks decide to produce a yearbook, the PTA may need to provide a person to coordinate it. Activities include gathering material throughout the year, finding a publisher, contracting with a publisher, creation of the book, and sales of the book.
Child Advocacy (Benevolence, Scholarships, Safety)
This program is focused on lending a hand to students within our school that need supplies, summer school, or other things that they are unable to afford. The school counselor is able to work anonymously with these students, and the chair of this committee would work to provide funds or anything else the counselor has determined is needed. There are many other things associated with safety and assisting other schools that this chair can monitor and bring forward to the PTA.
