Sonya Hayes: Principal
sonya_hayes@roundrockisd.org
I grew up in
Southeast Texas, on the border of the Gulf of
Mexico and Louisiana. I am teased by my friends
because despite the location of my childhood
home, I dislike seafood and most spicy Cajun
food! I majored in English at Lamar University
in Beaumont, and spent nine wonderful years
teaching high school students the beauty and
importance of English Language Arts. I attended
the M.Ed. program at Southwest Texas University
(it will always be SWT to me) and graduated in
2002. I was hired to be an assistant principal
at Round Rock High School, where I stayed for
over 5 years. I have been the current Principal
for DMS since January 2008, and I am currently
working on my PhD at Texas A&M University (gig
‘em, Aggies!). Through 19 years of serving in
education, I have formed many friendships with
other teachers, administrators, and now adult
students.
My greatest passion
in my life is my family. I grew up with three
sisters, who continuously remain the foundation
of my family. I live in Round Rock with my
husband who is a police officer for the Round
Rock Police Department. For both of us, it is
our 2nd marriage, and together we have 5
children—ranging from 8 years old to 23 years
old (2 are in college, 2 in high school, and one
in elementary school.) Of course, I have over
1000 students at Deerpark that I also call my
own. It is important to me that my students are
treated with respect
and dignity because
that is the way I would want my children treated
in their own learning environment. I love to
read, write, watch movies, travel, and try new
things. I am a lifelong learner and try to
instill into all my students the value of
education and a love for learning. |

I am a graduate of Huston-Tillotson University in Austin,
Texas where I majored in Business Administration. I
received my alternative certification after working several
years as a manager for H.E.B. Food Company. I began my
teaching career in A.I.S.D. at Blackshear Elementary in 1996
where I served as team leader and CAC member. Transferring
to Webb Middle School in 1999, I obtained my ESL
certification and began teaching World, Texas, and American
History in the English Language Learners Academy (ELLA). In
addition to teaching, I also coached 7th and
8th grade
football and basketball. In
2007, I worked as a science teacher, coach, and interim
principal at Lamar Middle School. I attended the M.Ed
program at Concordia University the same year and graduated
in 2008. Following graduation, I was hired as a High School
Instructional Coordinator for the Office of Bilingual/ESL
Education. I love teaching and learning new things. During
my career, I have had the opportunity to present at local,
district, and state professional development to teachers in
the use of sheltered strategies, differentiation of
instruction, and the implementation of technology in the
classroom.
I am married to Regina Hall and we have one son, Jeffrey,
who is going to the fifth grade. I enjoy church activities,
spending time with my family, listening and playing music,
running, and playing just about any sport and video game.

Smith: Vice Principal

I
grew up in Houston, Texas. I knew I wanted to be
a teacher when I was three years old. I
went to The
University of Texas (burnt orange is in my
family) and graduated with a degree
in Special Education.
I then began my teaching career in the Dallas
/Fort Worth Area. After
a time at home
raising my children, I went back to school at
The University of Texas- Dallas and received a
Masters of Science in Human Development and
Childhood Disorders. I worked in Early Childhood
Education for over 10 years running a United Way
Agency and providing professional
development to Early Childhood teachers. I
finally moved back to Austin. I taught Special
Education at Canyon Vista Middle School and
started a program to receive a Certificate in
Educational Administration from Texas State. I
went on to become the assistant principal of Canyon
Vista and had a wonderful time working with
middle school students. I was there from
2002-2007. In February of 2008, I had the honor
of moving over to Deerpark Middle School. I
adore middle school students and find them very
funny and interesting.
I am married to my
college sweetheart Kirk and we have 4 children.
Three of my children are married now, and have
given us six wonderful grandchildren. I always
tell them I am much too young to be a
grandmother! Connor is a Senior at Westwood
High. Most weekends in the fall are taken up
with Westwood games, UT games or playing with
grandbabies. I try to stay in shape by swimming
3 times a week and walking our family dogs,
Maggie and Buster. I love to travel, read, see
movies, and enjoy musical theater. I am
passionate about empowering students to develop a
love for learning. As a lifelong learner, I am
proud to be a part of the
the Deerpark
Community of learners. |
