BREAKING NEWS STORY The Fourth Grade Symphony At Deep Wood Elementary A Story By: Heather
|
|
The fourth graders are going to an Austin Symphony Orchestra Concert this year! This year the Austin Symphony’s Young People’s Concerts will be performed at The Long Center for the Performing Arts for the very first time. The concert was cancelled the last two years because the orchestra did not have a place to perform. The concert will be on May 21st. This year’s theme is “A Multicultural Festival”, featuring music from around the world. The students will hear Rossini’s William Tell Overture, Benjamin’s Jamaican Rumba, Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Gould’s American Salute, Lecuona’s Malaguena, and “Arabian Dance”, “Chinese Dance”, and “Russian Dance” from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. The fourth graders have learned all about the instruments of the orchestra in music class and now they are studying the composers and the music that they will hear at the concert. Mrs. Choate and the fourth grade teachers would like to thank the PTA for giving our students this cultural opportunity. |

The Duck Pond A Story By : Kaylea
This year the whole fifth grade walked to the Duck Pond for a field trip. My friends Alana, Haven Addie, Cydnie and I brought our cameras and we were taking pictures. The boys were playing football with the volleyball net and they were all diving to try to get the ball. Also some girls were playing volleyball. Then we started to play tennis and a lot of the balls went over the top of the tennis court fence so I went to get all of the ones in the water. Then we went to eat lunch and one of my other friend’s Mom came and brought a blanket. Some other people and I went and ate by them. After we ate lunch we had to walk back to Deep Wood. |

World Cultures Night A Story By : Nicole
World Culture’s Night is a time for fun and to celebrate cultures from all over the world. The first and third graders put on quite a show at the beginning. They sung music from different countries. With Mrs. Choate directing them, they stayed right on key. The dragon parade was also a treat. There were loud noises and cheering as the dragons came through. They were made by none other than the kindergartners of Deep Wood. After the dragon parade and singing ended, the fourth graders put on a square dance. They did all sorts of tricks. After they performed, the fourth graders and the audience danced the “Cotton Eyed Joe”. Lots of people went to different booths filling out their passports. When they got an answer right, the person at the booth would stamp their passport. People traveled all over the world [school] to get their passport filled out. As soon as they got all of their answers, they traveled back to the front desk. There they would write their name and teacher and were entered into a drawing. The next morning at school, Mrs. Reilly, the school’s art teacher, summoned dragons [the kindergarteners] in a big dragon parade. Then she drew names from each grade. Only a few people from each grade won a map, atlas, and globe. |

Help Our Planet A Story By : Ashleigh
This is a reminder about helping the earth. Pollution is harmful to us and our planet. Just a little pollution can cause a big problem. Some of this pollution is from idling. Now you are thinking, “Hey, what is idling?” Well I’ll tell you, idling is leaving your car on but not going anywhere (like sitting in traffic). If we keep this up, and a lot of us do, our beautiful blue skies will become gray and well… not so beautiful. Plus our ecosystem will collapse, so to prevent that we need everyone to help. You may ask yourself how you can do that. Well, I’ll tell you. If you know you’re not going to move for a long time then turn off your car engine. If you live close to where you need to go, ask your parents if you can ride your bike, skate, walk or take the public bus. Another way to help is to spread the word to your friends, neighbors and family. We all need to reuse, recycle, and reduce. Help out to make the future a better place for the next generation. |
