No More Litter Bugs

A Story By : Ashleigh and Hayden

I’m going to let you in on a secret.  The ozone layer is depleting, don’t know what that means? Well it basically means in a while harmful radiation will eventually enter our planet and destroy us all!  Basically we our throwing away so much trash that trash dumps put in a landfill.  Some appliances can give off harmful chemicals to our planet.  Besides some of the stuff should be recycled, recycling is when you reuse something. Ever heard of the three R’s? The three R’s are reduce, reuse, and recycle. If you use these in your life and tell your friends about it, you can take a chunk out of our landfills.  In some states you can even earn money off of recycling! Yep you heard us right. If you recycle some soda bottles you could earn some quick cash! It’s very important not to litter everywhere because that could disrupt the Ecosystem. It’s also very important to recycle in the places where you live, because eventually it could turn into a landfill! Tune into our next issue where we talk about recycling.

Is It  Waste Of Time?

A Story By : Erin and Stephanie

What is big, black and white, eats bamboo, and needs our help? Yep, you’re right. It’s the endangered Giant Panda. There are about 1,600 left in the world, and even though they breed their whole life only a couple survives. About 200 pandas die a year and only about 120 are born a year. If a mother has two babies, she will abandon one and take care of the other. Pandas love snow. On the first day it snows they go exploring into this new white wonderland. Their predators are wild dogs, white Bengal tigers, and people just like us because even though we don’t realize it, we are killing them. A lot of people love Pandas, but one man says, “Let’s pull the plug on pandas, because they’re all going to die anyways. Let’s stop wasting our money on Pandas and spend it on animals that have better chances of surviving.” But courageous Mark Wright is defending the Pandas and so can you. One of the teachers, Mr. Vahrenkamp, says that he totally agrees with saving the pandas. So does another fifth grade teacher named Mrs. Doyle. Pandas are a big impact to the world, without them Japan and China will run out of money. Pandas are a big hit there. So if you want to help the pandas, spread the word to anybody, your friends and family, teachers, even kids like you can make a difference! Sharing the world with the animals, finally at peace, makes the world go round. Get together with your friends and make a difference.

Cut and Plant

A Story By: Ashleigh and Hayden

All of you out there probably have nice cozy homes, but do you know you are on what used to be an animal habitat. A lot of people have been over using land and cutting down forests to make more land for building. More and more species are losing their habitats every day. Here are some thoughts about the environment from the 5th grade teachers of Deep Wood.

Mr. Vahrenkamp:

Q. Do you think that people are cutting down more trees then they should?

A. I guess it depends where it is. So yes if they are not replanting them.

Q. Do you think they should plant a tree when they cut down one?

A. It would be the responsible thing to do.

Q. Do think some land owners are getting carried away with land?

A. When they take more than needed, yes.

Mrs. Doyle

Q. Do you think that people are cutting down more trees then they should?

A. Yes because they’re taking homes away from animals.

Q. Do you think they should plant a tree when they cut down one?

A. Yes because it takes so long for a tree to grow back.

Q. Do you think some land owners are getting carried away with land?

A. Yes if they are cutting too much then they need.

Now it’s up to you to help the environment just by doing little things you can do every day. Just by turning off the lights in a room you’re not using, taking shorter showers, or something as simple as turning off the water when you’re brushing your teeth!

Movie Review: What The Deaf Man Heard

A Story By : Heidi

This movie is about a boy that is on a bus and his mother tells him not to say a word until she gets back because she was getting off the bus. Well, his mother died so he had to pretend he was deaf and mute. It’s amazing how when you pretend to be deaf and mute how you can hear other people’s secrets. He is included in a lot of secrets and it helps him to understand things that other people don’t know. Well he grows up and he sees people doing bad things. He knew what they were doing because he had heard everybody’s secrets. Years later the people that take care of him put him in court. When he says I do somebody faints and dies because it was such a shock, and the bad man knows he was going to get in trouble. It’s called What the Deaf Man Heard because he pretends he was deaf but he heard things. I think this is a really good movie if you like to imagine things you would too!
