Caraway Heritage

Kathy Caraway Elementary, formerly North Oaks Elementary, opened its doors in 1978, and Kathy Caraway was its first and only principal until 2002, when she retired and the assistant principal, Shelly Hohmann, became principal.

When Mrs. Caraway opened North Oaks, the Carlwood (front) side of the school was a dirt road with no houses. That is the reason the school address is the backside on Oak View.

The original colors of the school were orange and white, but they were changed to blue and white when our school was named a National Blue Ribbon School.

Before Mrs. Caraway died in 2004, school staff was able to share with her that they were planning to ask the school board to change the name of the school in her honor, and the first year of the school name change occurred in 2005-2006.  A few staff members or substitutes were original members of the faculty or arrived shortly thereafter, including Mrs. Barnes, Mrs. Rieck, Mrs. Lankford, Mrs. Dixon, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Sanders, and Ms. Rogers.
