Welcome to Caraway Elementary!
If you are new to our school, welcome!
We are so glad to have you join our Caraway community.
Formerly, our school name was North Oaks, but it changed to
Caraway four years ago to honor our compassionate friend and
exemplary educator, Kathy Caraway, who was the principal of North
Oaks from the time it opened in 1978 until her retirement in 2002.
My name is Shelly Hohmann, and this is my eighth year to be the
principal of Caraway Elementary. I am fortunate to lead a school
that has amazing children, supportive parents, and a dedicated
teaching staff. We are looking forward to a productive year with you
and your children. I received my Bachelor of Education and my
Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of
Texas at Austin. I earned my mid-management degree at Texas State
University. All of my teaching experience has been in the Round Rock
Independent School District, where I taught second grade and fourth
grades at nearby Spicewood Elementary. This is my 26th year in
education! I was the assistant principal here at Caraway Elementary
for four years before I was named principal in 2002.
My husband’s name is David, and he works as a structural design
engineer in the bridge division of TxDOT. We have two children: Kyle
(22) is a graduate of Westwood High School, and he is a Texas Tech
Red Raider majoring in landscape architecture. Emily (21) is also a
WHS graduate and a junior at UT studying event management. My
hobbies include traveling with my family and friends, reading,
walking, and doing yoga/pilates.
This school year we have continued our philanthropic program as the
RRISD pilot school for a program called A Legacy of Giving. This
initiative teaches students about philanthropy in the school
environment. Students will have a voice in deciding which projects
we decide to complete, and we will have more information forthcoming
about this important involvement. We are also highly involved in
various other programs that include parents as partners in the
education process, such as No Place for Hate and Watchdog Dads. In
my role as principal, I get a chance to know all of the students and
parents, and I appreciate our close-knit community where we work
together in partnership for the students of Caraway Elementary. I
look forward to meeting each new student that joins us, and I enjoy
receiving feedback from parents. We are a great school, but there is
always room for growth and improvement. We have an active and
supportive PTA that welcomes you to join them in supporting our
school. There are numerous volunteer opportunities that enable you
to be an active participant in your child’s education.
