What is a Parent Support Specialist?
This new position came about because Round Rock was one of 42 cities in the country to be awarded a three-year grant (started in March 2006) called “Safe Schools/Healthy Students”. This grant, which promotes the physical and emotional health, safety and wellness for all children, has opened the door for the Round Rock Independent School District to partner with other community agencies.
Research has shown that the more parents are involved in their children’s education, the better students perform in school. However, there are sometimes barriers that prevent parents from being involved in their children’s education. The role of the CVMS Parent Support Specialist is to help parents overcome barriers to parental involvement by linking them with community and in-district resources, services, and information. The grant has made it possible for all RRISD schools to have a Parent Support Specialist.
Jennifer Clitheroe is the new Canyon Vista's Parent Support
Specialist for 2007-2008. She is here to answer questions, put
parents in touch with needed resources and plan and promote
workshops of interest to our community. If you have any questions,
concerns, frustrations, etc., please feel free to contact
Jen Clitheroe or
call her at 917-9227. She would also love input into programs that would be of interest to parents.
Parent Resource and Opportunity (PRO) Center
You can find our Parent Support Specialist on the first floor in our Parent Resource and Opportunity (PRO) Center.
The PRO Center is a room on the first floor next to the MPR - parents
should sign in at the office and office personnel will direct them to the
PRO Center. The PRO Center is a place for parents to volunteer, meet, and attend workshops, as well as find resources on many different topics with regard to parenting. Feel free to use the PRO and its resources whenever you would like – please be sure to sign in at the Office first. The Parent Support Specialist's office hours are usually Mondays and Fridays from 10: 30 am to 1:30 pm. Jen is also available by appointment, contact her at the contact information listed above.
The Parent Support Specialist plan for 2007-2008 is to decrease the barriers to parental involvement at CVMS by:
- Organizing and facilitating educational and informational workshops.
- Providing support to all parents by identifying district and community resources that are available to parents and their children.
- Helping to set up and maintain the Parent Resource Opportunity Centers (PRO Centers) on our campus.
- Supporting families who have complex needs by identifying accessible community resources and serving as members on campus student support teams (or appropriate campus response teams).
- Working closely with PTA, campus parent organizations and other staff members to help organize various parent volunteer opportunities.
