Mandated Annual Fitness Testing

November 2007 - Because of new legislation, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has mandated annual fitness testing for all students in grades 3 - 12. The TEA has selected an assessment called FITNESSGRAM to serve as the state-wide assessment instrument. This assessment measures three components of health-related physical fitness using criterion-referenced standards, called Healthy Fitness Zones, to determine students' fitness levels on what is optimal for good health. The three components are:

  • Aerobic capacity
  • Body composition
  • Muscular strength, endurance & flexibility.

All students must be tested during the 2007-08 school year. Most students will be tested in a physical education or athletics class. Students not enrolled in a physical education course have already been tested. Student results will be released to a parent or guardian upon written request to the Canyon Vista Middle School PE Coordinator, Nichole Hunt. Composite results for RRISD will be sent to the Texas Education Agency as required by law.

For questions in regard to the fitness testing, please contact RRISD's Supervisor for Physical Education Curriculum: Traci Neely at 464-5480.
