Why Orchestra?
Playing a stringed instrument is a skill you can enjoy as an individual player or as a part of a musical group for the rest of your life. Orchestra membership can teach self-confidence, self-awareness, coordination, concentration, personal discipline, and attention to detail. It teaches decision making as well as music making. That is probably why orchestra students usually earn better grades in other studies and get along better in school.
The skills and study habits learned within this framework carry over into adulthood and into life. Orchestra provides excitement through performance. It's a special group of young people working together as a team. Students need to be somebody special...balanced by the equally basic need to "belong" to something unique, a peer group, a set-aside circle of friends.
Playing in the orchestra teaches children to be creative, to work towards a common goal. It gives a sense of belonging. It teaches them to work together and helps them make friends.
