Canyon Vista Middle School Electives - Band

Curriculum

 

Canyon Vista offers a multitude of band classes for all skill levels.

 

Band Description
BEGINNING BAND

Prerequisite: Screening for  Screening for placement on propriate instrument

Students develop basic playing skills, good practice habits, music reading skills, and self discipline. Students perform in several informal concerts during the year. 

 

Note: Instrument rental or purchase may be required. This course is for 6th, 7th and 8th graders who have not played a wind or percussion instrument before. Students who need additional work on fundamental playing techniques may also be enrolled in this course with director approval. 

   
BAND 7/8

Prerequisite: Beginning Band

Students continue development of basic ear training/listening skills, individual/ensemble playing skills, tone production, music reading, and musicianship. Students participate in a variety of concerts. They may also participate in U.I.L. Contest, District and Region Try-outs, solo and ensemble contest, Pep Band, and community programs. 

 

Note: Attendance is required for all rehearsals and performances. Instrument rental or purchase may be required. 

   
ADVANCED BAND 7/8

 

Prerequisite: Beginning Band and/or director's approval

This course is for advanced seventh and eighth grade band musicians. Students continue to develop ear training/listening skills, music reading, individual/ensemble playing skills, and musicianship. They participate in weekly technique classes which provide individual attention and evaluation. Students perform at concerts, U.I.L. band contest, solo-ensemble contest, district and region band auditions, and community programs. They also may perform at pep rallies and football games.
   
JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Prerequisite: Beginning Band and/or director's approval

This course is designed for advanced seventh and eighth grade band musicians. Students explore and play jazz, pop and rock music. They learn jazz techniques, showmanship, and experiment with their individual expression. This course includes rehearsals and concerts outside the school day. Jazz Ensemble students must be enrolled in Band 7/8. Only those positions which cannot be filled by band students may be filled by other students (for example, piano, guitar, string or electric bass) subject to audition and instructor approval.
