 Cactus Ranch Chess Club Chess Helps Elevate Scholastic Successes. The CRE Chess Club is open to all CRE students with strong interests in chess. No knowledge of chess is required, but students should have continued interests in chess to stay in the club. The purposes of the club are: -to teach beginners how to play, and the fundamentals of chess, -to teach advanced players advanced chess knowledge (chess tactics, algebraic notations, chess clocks, etc...), -to provide all players the opportunity to play both recreational and competitive chess, -to build discipline and confidence in students while having fun playing chess, and -to form CRE Chess Club team to compete at local scholastic chess tournaments. We will meet from 2:45-4:00 on Tuesdays from September 15 through the end of the school year. The fee for this club will be $5 this year to cover T-shirt cost. We will collect the fee at registration. Chess sets and boards, along with notation books (to record students’ games) will be provided for use during club meetings. Students are encouraged to have their own chess set and board at home to practice and review their own games. Through out the school year, students will bring home chess puzzles to practice what they have learned; for their benefit, students are strongly encouraged to complete those puzzles at home, but are not required to turn them in. Members of the CRE Chess Club are encouraged to participate in the local scholastic chess tournaments at least once or twice a year.
