What is PBS?
PBS stands for
Positive
Behavior
Support. It places emphasis on school-wide systems of support that include proactive
strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student
behaviors in order to create and maintain a positive school environment. All
areas of the school including the classroom and areas common to all students
(such as hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, etc.) have expectations appropriate
to that area. At Brushy Creek, our behavior expectations focus around three
qualities: respect, responsibility,
and integrity.
Attention is focused on keeping
those systems of support in place and reminding students of them in order to
help improve lifestyle results for all children. School-wide expectations
are posted throughout the school.
Within a PBS school, adults introduce the desired behaviors, model them, and
then reinforce the positive social behavior with all students at the school. Teaching behavior expectations and rewarding students with praise is a more
positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur and then responding.
The main purpose of PBS is to provide a framework in which appropriate
behaviors are the school norm, thus creating a positive climate for all who
belong.
What
can I do as a parent to support PBS?
1. Use our common terminology at
home! Respect, responsibility
and Integrity are words your children should be familiar with, and the terms
are universal!
2. When visiting our campus, be
mindful of our hallway expectations, and understand that your children are
expected to walk silently in line with their class.
Encourage all of our BCE students to show respect, responsibility,
and integrity.
