After School ASPIRE Program At Voigt Elementary

Story By Tyler and Dillon

Does any one know what Y.M.C.A. ASPIRE is? Well Tyler and Dillon are going to tell you about the activities in the ASPIRE program and the people that work here. The Y.M.C.A. after school program is a fun place for kids to be when their parents work after school. All the kids get to play games and do different activities; you get to have snack, do art and more.

The first person we interviewed was Nicholas, one of the kids on the Viking Voice online newspaper. When we interviewed Nicholas, we asked him about how it feels to actually write a story for the online newspaper, and he said, “It feels great because people can actually see what you write and also the fun of writing a story.” Which I agree with, because writing a story can be fun. Then we have Mrs. Chris who is the Short Sports instructor/teacher. When we interviewed her we asked her which is harder to teach pre-K thru first or second thru fifth and she said, “Second thru fifth because the older kids think they already know how to play the game.” Next we have Coach Adrian, who is a counselor of the YMCA after school program. When we started to interview him I asked him, “What does it mean to you to be a counselor?” and he said, “I just really want to be able to help kids who go to the Y understand the reason their parents make them come here after school. They can play and be safe from danger from 2:45-6:30 everyday.”

That’s one of the many reasons we come to the YMCA  after school program. We like it a lot and we like all the people there. We also like all the teachers. We think everyone should go here.

Thank you for reading our story and we hope you read some more of our stories.  Click here to view video

How To Protect Yourself From Getting Sick

A Story By Cody

All over the world, there have been reports of the flu in America, Japan, Mexico, and even China!

We need to stay clean or we will have to get a shot! And, it is not good to go to the doctor these days, because there are other bills to be paid. Also, a lot of people are saying the hospital bills are too high!

The flu season is coming up, so you need to be clean. Always wash your hands, take a shower, and when you cough or sneeze, do it a little low on your shoulder. If you have friends, tell them this so they can get the information they need to stay healthy. After lunch, recess, or touching a friend, remember to wash your hands or get a hand sanitizer. And wash it good!  Again, this is to keep you safe and keep you from getting shots. You may not see the flu but it is there, everywhere you touch and on everything you move!

Fifth Grade D.A.R.E.—What is it?

A Story By Nate

For you kids out there that don’t know what D.A.R.E. is, I will tell you. First I will tell you what it stands for. It stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Now, a drug is a medicine like Tylenol. Abuse is like using something wrong. Resistance means not doing it. And education means learning. What I wish was different is that everybody could join it. When you join the D.A.R.E. club you will get a cool free t-shirt. And at the end of school, if you join, you will go to the cafeteria and some teachers will tell you thank you for joining the D.A.R.E. program. Then they will call all the members names in the cafeteria to get their diploma. Well, thank you for reading my story and have a great day.

My Field Day Experience

A Story By Danielle

This story is about my field day at Voigt Elementary. My day started out great; I needed to do something with student council that morning at 8:00. We were going to take care of  Pre-kinder and Kindergarten students. I took a Pre-kindergarten class out at 10:05, and they did races on the field first. I had to watch them and make sure they didn’t fight or cut in line.  Then they went to play tug-of-war.  The boys were on the left and the girls on the right. The boys were winning, but then some adults came and all the students went to the right, and all the older people went to the left. The students  won! Then they were thirsty and they needed to go inside, because they did not have a water bottle. The time went by so fast, they needed to get ready to leave to go home. After that, I went back to class.  At 11:00, it was time for me to go to my field day; I was happy. The first thing I did was the same thing that the Pre-kinder did. It was only kind of different, because we had more games to play. I finished in second place, and the other team was still on their first person. Then we asked Ms. Ruth to get us wet with a water hose. Then we went to dance - I felt great! So then we got some nets and some stuffed pigs to throw up into the air and catch.  We even saw a hot air balloon, and some people almost fell to the ground.  We finally went back inside.  It was so much fun!

Book Review: FOUND

The Missing - Book 1

A Story By Robert

It was a morning like any other morning.  KVIC started and all of a sudden there was a surprise.  A secret guy came on TV and said that there were 40 books in all, hidden around the school, and when you find it, you should grab it. Then you are supposed to read the book and put your name on the inside-front cover of the book. Then, after you finish reading the book, you go to the library and they ask you questions.  That way they can tell if you read the book or not. After that, you get a prize in the library. But, you only get the prize if you answer the questions correctly.  Then you pass the book on to a friend so that the other person can “Read it Forward.”  Right now I am on chapter seven, and it has thirty-three chapters.  I really like it and would recommend it to you.  In the beginning of the book, Angela DuPre, a Sky Trails agent, goes inside the cockpit of an airplane and notices that the seats are empty.  And then, she hears a cry coming from inside the airplane.  When she goes in to the passenger seats, she sees that everyone on the plane is a baby.  You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens next. Check out the video below.

Interview with Mrs. Schmidt—Voigt Librarian

A Story By Avery

Voigt has a top secret scavenger hunt every year for the fourth and fifth grades.

So we thought we would interview the LBI (Library Bureau of Investigation) Director and ask her a few questions about Read it Forward.

Q.  How did you think of this activity for the upper grades?
A. The middle schools have been doing this and some of the elementary school librarians decided to try it in the elementary schools.  There are several elementary schools in Round Rock doing the same program and reading the same book.

Q.  How did you get the books?
A. I used some of my book fair profit and ordered them from Scholastic.

Q.  Have you read the book?
A. Yes

Q.  Did you like it? Why or Why not?
A. I loved the book! It was mysterious, suspenseful, and full of action. I can't wait to read the sequel. It's called Sent.

Q. Will you do this next year?

A. Yes. I think our 4th and 5th grade students have been really excited about this which makes me excited.

Q.  Will you have the same book next year?
A. No. I'll use a different book next year. The elementary librarians will get together and decide which book to use for next year's program. Then I'll order them and have them ready for next year.
