Helping Students to Prepare Academically
Study Habits
- Students should review new information within 24
hours of first learning the information in order for the brain to
remember
- Have students complete homework the night it is assigned
- Have students review material from class that day - Students should practice note taking skills
- Summarize new information
- organize information in different ways (outlines, webs, lists, etc.)
What Parents Can Do at Home
- Ask students to explain their homework to you- ask "why" and "how do you know"
- Prepare a place to do homework
- Have a set routine or time to do homework
- Help students use a planner or other organizational system
- Ask students to compare school learning to events and situations in your home life
- Communicate with the teacher about specific
problems your student is having:
- They can't remember how to start
- They don't understand the assignment expectations
- They are overwhelmed, frustrated, or are shutting down
Knowing When Students Need Help
- All students will receive a report card after the 3rd week of the marking period, at the end of each marking period, and at the end of each semester. Many parents want information more frequently. You may call or email any of your teachers (information is on the RRHS website). However, many parents use Home Access or Teacher Web to get information more quickly.
- Check Home Access Center frequently. This website allows you to check the grades, attendance and discipline records for your child. The information is updated daily. To obtain access, please call Tori Brady at 464-6021. The website can be found at http://schools.roundrockisd.org/rrhs/ or by using the link on the RRHS homepage.
- Monitor Teacher Web. There is a new feature on Teacher Web that allows parents to create one site for all of the teachers they are monitoring. This site will let you know which teachers have recently updated information and can be found at www.myteacherweb.com.
