What is PBIS?
PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral
Interventions and Supports.
It places emphasis on school-wide systems of support that
include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and
supporting appropriate student behaviors in order to create
and maintain a positive school environment. All areas of
the school including the classroom and areas common to all
OTE students (such as the hallways, restrooms, cafeteria,
etc.) have expectations appropriate to that area. Attention
is focused on keeping those systems of support in place and
reminding students of them in order to help improve
lifestyle results for all children. School-wide
expectations are posted throughout the school.
Adults introduce the desired behavior, model it, and then
reinforce the positive social behavior with all students at
the school. Teaching behavior expectations and rewarding
students with a "Star Texan" ticket is a more positive
approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur and then
responding. The main purpose of PBIS is to provide a
framework in which appropriate behaviors are the school
norm, thus creating a positive climate for all who belong.
