Pajama Story Night
Pajama Night is sponsored by the library and
PTA. Students dressed in pajamas, and their parents, come to school at
6:45pm. The evening begins with a very short PTA meeting. After the
meeting, students and parents are divided into two groups. One group
remains in the cafeteria to watch the video of the 'Laurel' libraries
created in Ugandan schools in June. The other group moves to the
classrooms surrounding the library to hear delightful stories read by
their teachers - who are also dressed in pajamas! The evening concludes
with cookies and milk served in the cafeteria.
Scholastic Book
Fair
Laurel Mountain Library hosts two book fairs
each year. The fairs carry a wide variety of recognized books, both
hardback and paperback. Two preview days are scheduled for so that each
class can come to the library and view the books before the actual
beginning day of sales. During each fair, one night is scheduled as
'Family Night.' On this evening, the library is open for book sales
until 7:00pm.
Checks for books must be made out
to Laurel Mountain Elementary. Sales tax is charged at a rate
of 8.25% on all purchases. 25% of the total amount of book sales
remains at Laurel Mountain for use in purchasing new items such as
books, book carts, equipment, etc., as needed. LME librarians also
select free books from the book fair, reflecting 10% of the total
sales.

OLibraries of Love
/ Laurel Mountain Elementary Superhero Readathon
It is time to celebrate SUPER
HEROES, especially Super Reading Heroes. Laurel Mountain Elementary has
partnered with Libraries of Love, a nonprofit, the past four years to
provide libraries for students in Uganda, Africa. At present, 'Laurel'
libraries can be found in eight public Ugandan schools, serving over 21,500 children. Mrs. Marshall takes teams of volunteers to Uganda each
summer to create the libraries and train the students and teachers how
to use their libraries. The LME Readathon is co-hosted by parents Anne
Webster and Lindy Buckley. Students request donations for the amounts
of time spent reading. The funding is used by Libraries of Love for
shipping (24,000 books were shipped in 2009), lumber for bookshelves in
Uganda, etc. 100% of funding received goes into creating libraries.
Dr. Seuss / Read
Across America Celebration
Students
and teachers love this week. Dr. Seuss books can be heard as they are
being read all over LME. Teachers plan many activities that are
extensions of Dr. Seuss books. Each day is a different 'Dr. Seuss' day.
Monday
everyone wears their 'Cat in a Hat' hat; Tuesday is 'Foot Day' -
students wear something strange on their feet, such as different
colored socks or different shoes; Wacky Wednesday finds students
wearing 'different' clothes - such as their clothes on backwards;
Thursday is 'Costume Day' with students dressing as a Seuss character;
and - on Friday it is time to be a Screetch. Students wear yellow stars
up on 'thars.' What a great week it is!
Birthday Book Club
The Birthday Book
Club is the perfect chance to honor your child on his/her birthday.
Students and parents may come to the library and browse the selection
of new 'birthday' books.. After a book is selected, a book plate is
placed in the book letting others know that the book was donated by a
specific person on his/her birthday. A picture is taken of the student
with his/her book and displayed in the library. The cost of a birthday
book is $15.00. Funding goes to purchase new books for the library
