Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Year, Sharon DeolSharon Deol
Sharon started her volunteer career at LME as a member of the PTA’s Inclusiveness Committee; soon after joining this committee, she conducted focus groups to learn what parents were thinking about the school and what their hopes were for their children. It was during these sessions that the discovery was made that many parents wanted their children to know about other places and cultures around the world. This led Sharon to start researching how to incorporate geography and cultural learning at the school.

She began leading the school’s Geography Club after school. This club had been solely focused on preparation for the annual National Geographic Bee, but she helped it evolve into a year-round program, as well as starting Geography Stars. Sharon teamed up with another parent to develop a year-round global-learning environment they called “Growing Up Global,” based on the book by Homa Tavanger. Their “Growing Up Global” program encourages teachers to incorporate global-learning into their classrooms, provides tools for teachers to conduct monthly “United Nations Days,” offers geography club and geography stars, strengthened the annual Global Fest, and established a committee made up of school staff, teachers and parent volunteers who collaborate and will continue the rich, new traditions at Laurel Mountain.  Thank you Sharon for your commitment to the children, teachers, and parents of the Laurel Mountain.
